Commercial Onion Scouting Program and BMP Trial

2001-2002 Vidalia Onion Area

David Riley (Entomologist),

David Langston (Plant Pathologist),

Stanley Culpepper (Weed Scientist),

Reid Torrance, Cooperative Extension Service, Tattnall Co. (912) 682-2766

Data will be collected by a commercial scout (Cal Roach) on insects, disease symptoms, weeds, other pests and fertilizer deficiency symptoms at 6-10 farm sites in the Vidalia area (see example figure of grower’s field º).

Data will be entered into a spread sheet and downloaded weekly to David Riley’s computer which will be passed on to David Langston and Stanley Culpepper for weekly treatment recommendations. Both scout data and treatment recommendations will be posted on a Vidalia Onion Website (Thad Paulk in Dr. Purvis’ lab has offered to help with this) and provided directly to the grower and the person responsible for spray treatments at each location.

Cal Roach (tel. 229-777-1685, fax. 229-387-9627), has agreed to provide commercial scouting services for this project. He projects that the funds available will allow weekly scouting of approximately 300 acres for a 6 month period with the understanding that the acreage is grouped (e.g. 50 acre blocks as in the figure above.). We have identified six Vidalia onion locations that are willing to maintain a Best Management Practice spray strip in the participating field sites that is only treated for pests based on weekly UGA recommendations.
