History

Delmas grew from a seedling orchard planted about 1877 by A.G. Delmas on his farm at Scranton, Miss. One superior seedling began bearing seven years later in about 1884.  The seedling was named 'Delmas' in 1885.  In about 1890 Mr. Delmas began grafting the cultivar in his nursery and orchard.  A general dissemination of 'Delmas' appears to have occurred via a mix-up in about 1902.  At that time, Mr. Delmas shipped scions to the Pierson Nursery in Monticello, Fla.  The scions, which were shipped as Schley, were found to be mixed with 'Delmas'.  'Delmas' was disseminated from the nursery as 'Schley' before the mixture was discovered. The original tree blew down in a storm in September, 1906.  The tree was severely headed back and uprighted.  'Delmas' has been used in pecan breeding and one cultivar, Rincon, has been released with 'Delmas' parentage. Because of the manner in which 'Delmas' was disseminated, the cultivar is usually found mixed in older orchards in the southeastern United States, but seldom occurs in blocks. In contrast, 'Delmas' is the major cultivar in Israel and usually occurs in blocks. (Sparks, 1992)

Comments

* Note:  This is an older cultivar planted in the Old Variety Test at the Tifton Campus.  Trees were planted decades ago when care was very different than it is now, and trees received much less care, so production data will reflect this fact.  Trees began receiving insecticides in 1962, fungicides in 1970, nitrogen in 1962, and drip irrigation in 1975.  The data for this cultivar was collected by several individuals, but the bulk of the data and the comments are from my predecessor Dr. Ray Worley.  This information was originally published here:  Worley and Mullinix, 1997.

Its low yield, low quality, and its extreme scab susceptibility are too many minuses for this cultivar for Georgia.  It performs well in Israel, but is not recommended here.
